Notice of Bylaws Vote, 2015 Leadership Election at Annual Meeting Dec 5, 2014

from Bill Pellerin, HAS President, email to the membership, 11/18/2014.

The Annual Meeting of the Houston Astronomical Society is scheduled for December 5, 2014 at the University of Houston. See the web site (www.astronomyhouston.org) or the GuideStar (newsletter) for details.

There are two items that will be presented to the membership for a vote at this meeting:

  • Revisions to the bylaws of the Houston Astronomical Society
  • Election of Officers, Board Members, and Committee Leaders

Without having passed the revisions to the bylaws, the Society is operating under the current bylaws which requires 15% of the membership to be present to have a vote. At our current membership level, it takes 73 members present to have a quorum.

If a quorum is not present at the December meeting the votes will be deferred to the January, 2015 meeting or to the first meeting after that with sufficient members present to comprise a quorum.

Bylaws revisions

The bylaws revisions include reducing the quorum to 10% and various changes to simplify the language in the existing bylaws. The board unanimously recommends the adoption of the bylaws with these revisions.

Election of Officers, Board Members, Committee Leaders

The nominating committee, led by our vice-president, Rene Gedaly, has produced two slates of candidates, one that aligns with the exiting bylaws and one that aligns with the revised bylaws. If the bylaws revisions are accepted by the membership the second set of candidates will be considered.

Information on both of these items can be found at the web site www.astronomyhouston.org, and in the October 2014 and November 2014 issues of the GuideStar newsletter.

Please review this information and make an effort to attend the December meeting to establish a quorum for voting.

If you have any questions, please contact me (you can respond to this email), or any member of the executive team: Rene Gedaly (vice president), Bill Flanagan (secretary), or Don Selle (treasurer).

I look forward to seeing you at the December meeting.
