Asterisms are they for real

Postby jessica anne-kingsley » Sun Mar 27, 2016 5:55 pm

Do you really see a coat hanger?

Is it a snake in Orion's belt or the letter S?

Do you see an owl or E.T.?

What asterisms really do look like what they claim to be and which ones s-t-r-e-t-c-h the imagination?

I see the constellations as patterns in the sky made of stars. I can't think of a single constellation that looks like what it's supposed to. I guess if all I had at night was the night sky to look at and predators to worry about I might see the same asterisms as the ancient people did

Yes, there are some groupings of stars that look like their name. As for constellation definitely Sagittarius and pretty much Cygnus.
Yes, the "Coat Hanger" does look like a coat hanger.
And ET does look like ET, more so than an owl.
And the "37" cluster in Orion, looks like the number 37 backwards (almost).

I thought the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything was the number 42. I guess I was wrong...

I was going to say the answer is written in the stars, but that would appear to be supporting astrology...

See that is what I mean. When I look at the "37" cluster I see a martini class and a champagne flute.

Truly, Ursa Major and Minor are much more the pot and ladle. Taurus the Bull would be much more ominous if it were more than just a head, hump, and forelimbs.

Peyote and mushrooms.... Good fuel for the imagination :)

I think most people see a teapot in Sagittarius. It's supposed to be an archer :)

Peyote and mushrooms sounds plausible :D
