How do you guys clean your eyepieces?

I put a thumb right on the glass, and I don't want to ruin it!

I'm not going to touch this one with a ten foot pole myself, because I seem to have my own issues with cleaning eyepieces.

I will say, however, that one thing that someone who can answer your question might want to know is, what make and model eyepiece is it? How it holds up to cleaning can certainly vary based the coatings involved.

Also, to any newbies browsing this thread I would advise against cleaning eyepieces if all it has on it is a few small specks of stuff, as those likely won't affect performance. Of course, that doesn't apply to you, as it sounds like you got a pretty nice thumbprint on it, and probably do need to clean it.

I have had good results using this method. It's a P.I.T.A. but works well for me.
Make sure you read carefully and follow directions.
Also Like Stephen pointed out Unless your eyepieces, Mirrors, lenses are really dirty there is usually is no need to clean them.

This is tough, and I don't even consider myself as an expert, but this is coming from working with photography. The word from the wise is never try to clean optics at the field. Worst thing that can happen is you scratch the lens and coating. I carry a Giottos Rocket Blaster at the field to blow off any specs of dust and take it home. Once you're in a clean, well-lit area, inspect the lens to make sure you have gotten all specs off, first by blowing then very gentle soft brushing. The most debated opinion is type of cleaning liquid to use. I'll leave that to you to decide. For myself, I like to use small amount of distilled water, and if that does not work, then maybe water with very mild detergent and water again. I don't like organic solvents, but that's my opinion. Here are some websites that may help you as well.

I would very much like to hear from other HAS members who have more experience. Good luck!

Todd - it's a great question, and it's a common problem, so I would like to hear more expertise on the subject. There are no stupid questions; it's stupid only if you don't ask them. :D
