Favorite Type of Deep Sky Object?

Favorite Type of Deep Sky Object?

So... what's your favorite class of deep sky object?

Open Clusters?
Globular Clusters?
Galaxies?
Bright Nebulae?
Planetary Nebulae?
Dark Nebulae?

Right now I'd have to say my favorites are between Planetary Nebulae and Globular Clusters. Planetary Nebulae are probably the easiest to see color in, exhibit an awful lot of variety, and in most cases stand high power well, leading to being able to examine many layers of detail. Globulars are just plain impressive, with all of those stars packed into such a tight space, and are good tests for the resolution of your telescope, and they come in all different sizes and concentrations.

I love all DSOs that are accessible with my small scopes. Love the way planetary and emission nebulae pop out when I use my UHC filter - need a dark site though. Globular clusters are fun to see with all the stars densely packed.

I recommend the League's Globular Cluster program. You learn to differentiate between the various cluster characteristics by evaluating their Shapely-Sawyer concentration class. The program guide gives examples of the various classes. Lots of fun!

^^ I second this. The globular cluster program was all kinds of fun for me, and definitely helped me appreciate globulars more
