Two key questions:

1.) what is the weight of the OTA?

2.) do you intend to use it for imaging, or visual only?

I guess it would be nice to give that information. I will only use the Newt for star hopping visual observing.
The OTA only weighs 14lbs.

The RA drive I have is probably good. The electrical wire could do with replacing. The cast iron cradle is ridiculously heavy and it rocks in the pier. The pier and massive legs are very sturdy. Quite a behemoth for a "small" scope.

I'm not well versed on Meade mounts these days, and I've never actually used the AVX. That said, I have a CG-5, which is the predecessor to the AVX. It actually has about a 5 lbs higher weight rating. For visual only, it would handle a 14lb OTA without problem. I suspect the AVX can as well.

The down side with this and most GoTo mounts like the AVX is that they typically can't be used in a manual mode.
