Question regarding limiting magnitude

Question regarding limiting magnitude

Postby edward-fraini » Wed Mar 28, 2012 3:31 pm

A question was asked about the limiting magnitude at the Columbus site, I thought it best to respond here as then it might be helpful to others.

There are several factors that determine the limit. It does depend on what you can see visually and under the best conditions I have never seen better than a visual magnitude of 5, this means you can see all the stars in the little dipper. But that is not the only thing to consider. This link is a handy calculation of the limiting magnitude I have used for a while and hope it is helpful.

Thanks for the info Ed; not bad considering Houston is just over the horizon.
