Celebrated Hubble's 25th anniversary with the kids by taking them to George Observatory last night for their first light celebration of the newly restored 36" Gueymard Research Telescope. Peggy Halford gave a nice presentation on the similarities of the Gueymard and Hubble telescopes, which are both Ritchey–Chrétien telescopes with primary mirror problems requiring upgrade, and a look foward to the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope. I hope they get the optics right for the James Webb because there will be no servicing mission to L2 Lagrange point. It was great to see a large crowd for the celebration. Too bad cloud cover was about 50% and transparency was average at best, so we only got to see Jupiter through the 36" reflector, although I have to admit the attached 11" refractor still gave a sharper view of Jupiter - collimation? Oh yeah, the kids really enjoyed the inflatable planetarium.
