Starting at George Bush Park is a good idea because it's easy to get going and hopefully there will be people to help you. (That's how I got started.) But pick open clusters and brighter globs and nebulae or you'll be very frustrated. Most of the galaxies will not be visible until you go to Columbus.

Of course, at some point you'll want to enjoy the better view of the bright objects from Columbus as well.

Indeed Steve. One thing a lot of newbies don't realize is that galaxies are the one class of object that basically REQUIRES dark skies to see well. Clusters can be seen in any skies in which you can see the individual stars, and the views of nebulae can be improved with filters, but galaxies, because they are diffuse like nebulae but are not gaseous emissions but shine primarily of starlight whose individual stars are too faint to be seen, there is nothing to be done but get to darker skies
