June 21, 2018, 10:00AM: Solstice Star (Day) Party

Stargazing isn’t only a night time event. Join the Houston Astronomical Society on the longest day of the day of the year as the sun reaches its highest point in the sky. Equipment will be provided on site to safely enjoy daytime sky watching. Hang out afterward and enjoy lunch in the park. Feel free to bring your lunch or enjoy a tasty meal from the visiting food trucks.

June 21, 2018, 5:00PM: Solar Series Art Exhibition on the Summer Solstice

Join artist Lisa Hardcorn for an evening of Art and Science as her Solar Series artwork is unveiled coupled with a short talk on the solstice.

When: Thursday, June 21, from 5:00PM - 8:00PM

Number of volunteers needed: 2-3.  This event is for artist Lisa Hardcorn, who was going to have an event with us last year, but had to postpone due to tragic circumstances.  Anyone with a telescope capable of safely observing the sun is welcome, and if someone would llike to give a short talk about the solstice, it would be appreciated.

HAS will be performing outreach for the Houston First Church of God’s VBS students.  If you’re interested in volunteering, please email outreach@astronomyhouston.org.

June 27, 2018, 7:00PM: Lord of the Rings Star Party

Join the Houston Astronomical Society for a planet viewing event and a screening of the Lord of the Rings at Midtown Park.  Once it gets dark, we'll take a look at a few planets in the night sky. However, the real “star” this night will be Saturn, which will be at its closest to earth this year.

July 20, 2018, 8:00PM: Second Baptist Chinese Exchange Student Star Party

Chinese foreign exchange students are visiting again this summer and we would like to show them the night sky. Viewing would be at Second Baptist Church, West Campus, North parking lot

July 21, 2018, 7:00PM: Julydoscope

Julydoscope is a space-inspired film event that's put on by the Houston Cinema Arts Society at Discovery Green in the heart of downtown Houston.  This event will feature lots of activities, including screenings of the short film finalists, and is FREE to the public.

August 22, 2018, 8:00PM: Westbury Community Garden Star Party

Join the Houston Astronomical Society at the Westbury Community Garden for a public star party.  This event is free to the public, and we’ll have great targets to observe, such as Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars!

When: August 22, from 8pm-10pm

August 25, 2018, 11:00AM: Garden Villas Family Fun Day

This event is free and open to the public!

Event: Garden Villas Family Fun Day

Where: Garden Villas Community Center (6720 S Haywood Dr., Houston, TX 77061)

When: Saturday, August 25, from 11:00AM - 1:00PM

Number of volunteers needed: 4+. This will be an introduction to an astronomical experience for both children and parents. Most have never used a telescope.

October 12, 2018, 8:30PM: Camp CLIFF Camp for All

On October 12th, more than 200 campers will be packed and ready for a fun weekend at Candlelighters Camp CLIFF at Camp for All. Camp CLIFF is a free weekend camp for children with cancer (ages 5-18) and their parents and siblings. This is a unique camp that includes the entire family, providing a weekend away from the stresses of childhood cancer.
