The observatory is temporarily out of order. Students will be advised when class is rescheduled.

4:00 pm Class meets at observatory
6:30 pm Dinner break (brown bag)
7:00 pm Class reconvenes for skills demonstration, personal access code, class photo, and observing
12:00 am 1st light window (summer)
02:00 am 2nd light window (summer)

Training covers opening and closing the observatory, operating the 12.5”  f/5 and C14 telescopes, and securing the building in case of emergency. After a short dinner break, students will reconvene to demonstrate competence in these areas:

  • Understanding the burden of responsibility for the facility
  • Documenting  "as found” and “as left” condition of the observatory
  • Proper startup and shutdown of the telescopes
  • Use of emergency procedures

September 21, 2019, 6:45PM: Novice Lab at the Dark Site

Join us at the Dark Site for a hands-on course for learning to navigate the night sky. Make sure as always to bring your red flashlights and insect repellent, but also be sure to bring a folding chair to sit in, and some paper and pen/pencil. Schedule of activities is as follows:

7:30-8:30 - detailed presentation on general sky mechanics plus a tour of the constellations.

8:30-9:00 - constellation sketching - we will all begin working on the AL's Constellation Hunter program together

9:00-11:30 - everyone will get the opportunity to locate various objects manually using my 10" dob.

The program concludes in time for anyone who wishes to leave at the 12 am light window. But of course, anyone is welcome to stay longer and observe.

October 05, 2019, 8:00PM: Discovery Green Star Party/International Observe the Moon Night

Join Discovery Green and the the Houston Astronomical Society (H.A.S.) for a star party in the heart of Space City. Take a deeper look at space with complimentary telescopes and learn more about space and astronomy.

October 08, 2019, 7:00PM: Loaner Scope Training

Training on the use of HAS Loaner Telescopes will is scheduled for October 8, 2019 at the Trini Mendenhall Community Center (where the HAS December 1414 Wirt Rd.

Training will start at 7:00 and run to 8:30 PM in a classroom assigned by the TMCC Staff. As you walk in to the Center, look at the room listing board to see which room this will be held in.

This will be a hands on training for the basic tools you need to begin serious astronomical observing. Included in the training will be the nomenclature of telescope parts, setting up the Dobsonian telescope and aligning the finder and Telrad. Also included will be star charts and how to read them, Telrad operation and use, star hopping (by star chart), and newtonian telescope collimation. If you wish to be attend the training please email HAS Loaner Scope Chairperson Allen Wilkerson at [email protected] to reserve your spot. The first 10 members to respond will be verified and contacted to confirm their spot in the class.

Additionally, if requested, instruction on the basics of setting up a GEM (Gerrman Equatorial Mount or polar mount) can be arranged. If this is desired please let Allen know in your email  requesting a spot in the training.
