When: Thursday, June 27, from 7:00PM - 8:00PM

# of volunteers needed: 1 volunteer to give an indoor presentation to approximately 40 children and adults

July 09, 2019, 7:00PM: Loaner Scope Training

Training on the use of HAS Loaner Telescopes will is scheduled for July 9, 2019 at the Trini Mendenhall Community Center (where the HAS December 1414 Wirt Rd.

Training will start at 7:00 and run to 8:30 PM in a classroom assigned by the TMCC Staff. As you walk in to the Center, look at the room listing board to see which room this will be held in.

This will be a hands on training for the basic tools you need to begin serious astronomical observing. Included in the training will be the nomenclature of telescope parts, setting up the Dobsonian telescope and aligning the finder and Telrad. Also included will be star charts and how to read them, Telrad operation and use, star hopping (by star chart), and newtonian telescope collimation. If you wish to be attend the training please email HAS Loaner Scope Chairperson Allen Wilkerson at [email protected] to reserve your spot. The first 10 members to respond will be verified and contacted to confirm their spot in the class.

Additionally, if requested, instruction on the basics of setting up a GEM (Gerrman Equatorial Mount or polar mount) can be arranged. If this is desired please let Allen know in your email  requesting a spot in the training.

Dr. Antonio Paris – 3D Mars

Over the last decade, the Mars Rovers Spirit and Opportunity have captured our imagination. We have all marveled at the amazing photographs sent back to Earth and the discoveries made by these technological marvels. Through these intrepid explorers, we have imagined ourselves on Mars and some have even been inspired to volunteer to to be the first Mars Colonists.

Come join us on July 12, when the Mars experience will continue! Take the next step on a grand tour of Mars in full 3D with our guide Dr. Antonio Paris. He will show us the Red Planet like we have never experienced it before!

Planetary Scientist Dr. Antonio Paris is the Chief Scientist at the Center for Planetary Science, an Adjunct Professor of Astronomy at St. Petersburg College, FL and a graduate of the NASA Mars Education Program at the Mars Space Flight Center, Arizona State University. He is the author of three books: Mars: Your Personal 3D Journey to the Red Planet; Space Science; and Aerial Phenomena.

            Please join us for this unique and exciting journey to Mars!

Join us at the Dark Site for a hands-on course for learning to navigate the night sky. Make sure as always to bring your red flashlights and insect repellent, but also be sure to bring a folding chair to sit in, and some paper and pen/pencil. Schedule of activities is as follows:

7:45-8:45 - detailed presentation on general sky mechanics plus a tour of the constellations.

8:45-9:15 - constellation sketching - we will all begin working on the AL's Constellation Hunter program together

9:15-11:30 - everyone will get the opportunity to locate various objects manually using my 10" dob.

The program concludes in time for anyone who wishes to leave at the 12 am light window. But of course, anyone is welcome to stay longer and observe.

Please RSVP to [email protected] (link sends e-mail) so that we know how many people will be there for the class.  Clear skies!
